Back Pain Self-help

If you suffer with back pain there are strategies to help:

  • stay active and try to continue with your daily activities

  • take anti-inflammatory medicine (these may not be suitable for everyone) – paracetamol on its own is not recommended for back pain but it may be used with another painkiller

  • check with a pharmacist or GP if you're unsure about which painkiller is suitable for you

  • use a heat pack (or hot water bottle) wrapped in a tea towel to relieve joint stiffness or muscle spasms

  • try doing some exercises and stretches for back pain

  • avoid staying in bed for long periods of time    (source NHS)

Pilates

I often recommend gentle exercise and pilates for self help for back pain.  This month Claire Seager has kindly contributed to my blog:

When your doctor or physio has cleared you for exercise, Pilates can be a great way to return to a healthy back and to prevent further problems.  Pilates strengthens core muscles which support and stabilise the spine, reducing the strain that can lead to back pain.  Pilates also keeps the spine mobile, promoting healthy disc and joint function, counter-balancing prolonged sitting, or repetitive movements through particular sports.

Claire Seager Pilates offers live and on-demand Pilates on the Pilatify app: www.pilatify.me plus in-person classes near Woking.
